Replacement brushes - set of two

Set of two replacement brushes

Set of two replacement brushes you can use in the Brush Pump Pen that let you draw anything from a hairline to a line a quarter inch wide. You can use these brushes to replace a brush in your Brush Pump Pen that has worn down or plugged up.

Made in Japan, the brushes are durable and supple. They mimic the action of sable brushes, but last much longer. As a general rule, you do not want to use sable brushes in a pen. Sable brush hair has scales on the side, which help hold more ink or paint in the brush when you dip it. This is not required in a brush pen, where you are already storing enough ink or paint in the reservoir. In this case, you want the flow of ink or paint through the brush hairs to be as smooth as possible.

Replacing a brush is easy. Grab the ferrule in the Brush Pump Pen and slide it out of the pen. If the fit is tight, work it out slowly. Try to remove the brush at the same time, but be careful - you do not want to damage the brush in case you can re-use it - see instructions below for "flushing the brush". Once the ferrule and brush are free, slide the new brush into the ferrule and re-insert the brush/ferrule unit into the pen. You should be able to press-fit it easily.

Flushing the brush

If the brush is not torn or worn down, you might not need to replace your brush. Ink and paint can dry in a brush and plug it up over time. When this happens, place the brush in a cup of water overnight. Much of the dried ink or paint will be driven out of the brush by the action of the water. If dried ink or paint remains in the brush, roll the brush between your fingers to break up the dried material. If some ink or paint still remain, try a little soap or cleaning solution.
